Acne is a disease of the sebaceous glands of the skin. It is caused by clogged pores, increased sebum production and the presence of bacteria. This leads to a thickening or inflammation of the lining of the follicle, which results in different levels of acne including:

• mild acne known as blackheads and whiteheads
• semi-severe acne involving inflammatory papules and pustules
• severe acne known as nodules and cysts, which can lead to acne scarring

Here’s how our Albuquerque acne facials work. To treat acne where it begins, the revolutionary Aramis™ laser uses a patented wavelength to penetrate the skin’s layers to the depth where sebaceous glands are located. The laser thermally alters the reactors in the sebaceous gland thereby reducing the size of the gland, reducing oil and bacteria production, and subsequently the number of resulting acne lesions. It also reduces acne scars. Many patients respond to Aramis laser treatments even when results from other kinds of treatment are minimal or unsuccessful.

Another proven approach to treating acne is Omnilux™ light therapy. The Omnilux™ blue light kills acne producing bacteria while the red light turns off the inflammatory cascade. The lights won’t damage your skin and there’s no pain!

For moderate to severe acne, we may add Levulan, a safe, naturally occurring topical chemical. This process is known as Photodynamic Therapy (PDT). Photodynamic Therapy is a remarkable new treatment for resistant acne. It is also highly effective in removing sun damaged skin, actinic keratosis (precancerous areas in skin), and rosacea. Levulan is placed on the skin and gets incorporated into damaged cells, bacteria that cause acne, and oil glands in the skin. The Omnilux™ blue light activates the Levulan which then shrinks the oil glands and eliminates damaged skin and acne- causing bacteria as well. Microdermabrasion will be done prior to the application of the Levulan. The entire procedure will take less than 1 hour, but you will need to avoid the sun for 2 days and it will be critical to wear sunscreen during this time. This procedure is scheduled in the early evening hours so as to avoid sun exposure.
